This work was filmed underwater by Jun Nguyen-Hatushiba
filmed in 2001 off the coast of south east Vietnam.
the work portrays the struggle of 6 vietnamese fishermen pulling cyclos along the sea floor.
the purpose of the work is to signify the harsh, difficult conditions of everyday life for many Vietnamese people, the fisherman dragging the cyclos in the bottom of the ocean shows the burden and hard work of the past that made the modern life easier.

the Memorial Project Nha Trana does not employ actors, they use real fishermen to show the fact that physical struggles are real. the fishermen does not use any helping tools to help them breath. this makes them struggle more as they are moving slowly into the bottom f the ocean this really emphasize the challenge they are facing.
in daily life pulling a cyclos is already a very tough job plus the heaviness of walking on the sand and water makes it tons more heavier and the breathing challenge makes it worse.
Jun Nguyen-Hatushiba wanted people to realize that the problem in our life are not the end of the world, some people in the world face even tougher problem and still able to solve and succeed.

the idea of modernism has made Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba realize that the world didn't become like today without effort. the use of real fishermen was to show how hard they work to help us with our daily life. we may not notice it but this video had inspired me to work as hard as others out there who's life are very hard and full with challenges.

i think the title suits the Nguyen's intention as the fishermen parading into an ocean shows the courage, the curios on the title was about the curiosity of the people of what its like to pull cyclos under the ocean. and the cowards was when the fishermen abandoned their cyclos to save their life and take a breath.

  1. I think Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba's work Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex—For the Courageous, the Curious, and the Cowards is more like performance than sculpture to me because his work was concerned with cyclos, human-powered rickshaws that are used to transport goods and people in Vietnam. This cheap means of transportation has provided a source of income for many of those unemployed as a result of the country’s reunification. Modernization, however, has made these vehicles, which are good for the environment, but slow moving and old-fashioned, unwelcome on Vietnamese city streets; and the government has banned further production of cyclos. Personally, He is artist that i like the most since i have been doing the blog because his work is not just picture, sculpture or underwater landscape. It's more deeply about feeling and thought and concerned the shock of modernization by used real 5 fisherman abandon the cyclos and swin together toward underwater.
The most very interested is the idea behind if his work to depicted a metaphorical memorial for the many Vietnamese boat people drowned in the aftermath of the war and modernization.
This work made me think about people in nowadays abandon their tradition and think it is not decent anymore. I hope in Thailand could maintain Thai traditional for long long time.

  2. These images of the under water video of the "Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam' (2001) are very moving with what is actually going on. For someone who first sights these images/videos would think these people are crazy but instead when we actually look at the meaning behind this extraordinary piece we can immediately feel sympathy towards those people who have struggled.

I have read that this symbolizes the conditions in which these people struggle to overcome challenges of the every day Vietnamese people and the transition into the era of modernization.

I think the title of this is "complex-For the Courages, the Curious and the Cowards" depicts for me the truth of how these people are living and how they have lived. I also think that it targets those directly being the "Courages, Curious and Cowards" of the Vietnamese society, the more literal approach "by the fact that the physical struggles are real".
