'Untitled' (2002) Richard Misrach

Richard Misrach's photography reflects the concept of the Sublime, from the Enlightenment.

Research Misrach's work by reading about his intentions, and also by looking at the work. Then answer the following questions;

2. Define the concept of the Sublime.
3. How did the concept of the Sublime come out of the Enlightenment thought?
4. Discuss the subject matter, and aesthetic (look) of Misrach's work to identify the Sublime in his work. Add some more images.
5. Identify some other artists or designers that work with ideas around the Sublime, from the Enlightenment era as well as contemporary artists.
6. How does Misrach's photography make you feel? Does it appeal to your imagination?
7. Add a Sublime image of your choice to your blog, which can be Art or just a Sublime photograph.

  1. Richard Misrach would have to be one of my favorite artists that I have blogged. His work personally gives of that vibe of that connects the physical with the emotional. Meaning that he opens that sense of freedom with vivid images of vast open seas and then that relaxation feelings sets in where theres just you and something that spans thousands of kilometers, your personal playground in way.

    He relates his work to concepts of freedom, Sublime and empiricism.
    It explores in depth what nature is capable of doing and how we are pushed to our limits in situations where in the blink of an eye this some what fantasy of beauty is washed away by waves of reality and truth. Playing with peoples views on what we perceive to be this fun loving day out can be tragically swept away. In order for this to happen the experience is needed both in terms of his images and life.

    On the other hand Misrach' work is again revolved around the sublimity of nature and in this case he has focused his "experiences" around the element of water.

  2. I think Richard Misrach's works are not just photos of environment. what he took these photos are warning of nature. As he said (http://www.artnet.com/awc/richard-misrach.html) "The world is as terrible as it is beautiful, but when you look more closely, it is as beautiful as it is terrible".I think, his idea is like my idea to look closely around our world. The beauties can be terribly instead if we do not care about our earth. Reflective Ocean will be pit of storm. Enormous mountain can be volcano. His work made me think like that.
    That's why i said it's not just a photos of environment to show only beauty of natural world.

    I quite like it too because I think her work depicted about beauty is in terrible weather. When we made environment angry, it will turn from beauty to terribly landscape. Thus, this work made me think obstacle can be useful in the future like the storm. It's heavy in the beginning a gradually disappear in the end.

    I think this works should publish in to society to make people understand and care more about the earth.
    Thire works. Finally, We must maintain constant vigilance, to protect the world from ourselves, and to embrace the world as it exists.
